Spruce Creek Trail

Last set of trail pictures :-).  On Thursday my son and I decided to take Kathy's suggestion and hike Spruce Creek Trail.  It was a beautiful day and the trail was packed nicely in the middle.  Veer off to one side or the other and you were in snow up to your waist.  The rest of this post is just pictures so move along if you aren't interested in looking at hiking pics :-).  I'll be back to training posts in the near future since my first race is in five weeks, yikes!

we tried to find the upper falls and never did

yep, he is taller than me, I mean he is on the uphill side :-)
We ran into a family looking for the falls as well and had them take our pic.

trees getting thin up here, so is the air. Had to stop and catch our breath about every 10 steps

We had a blast hiking this week.  I like hiking better than skiing in many ways.

Great pics! I'm so glad you guys made it up there! Rumor has it that this is one of John Fielder's (one of our CO photographer icons) favorite places in Colorado. You should see it in the summer when the wildflowers are blooming!

The scenery is breaktaking. Since we don't have "seasons" here in the tropics I really enjoy photos like these. I spent a lot of time looking at them, wishing I could be there. I used to ski, however, I can understand why you may like hiking over skiing. While hiking you can take everything in. What is that broken structure?

What a beautiful vacation location. I think I would like hiking more than skiing though I've done precious little of either (no skiing). The scenery would be hard to enjoy when terrified of falling down and getting seriously injured though. What/where is your first race this year?

Can't wait to try out some trails around there, but we're thinking of summer maybe.

Damn, it's so pretty there. I should move there!! :)

I LOVE the mountains in the summer, not so much in the winter. Always so much to explore!

Glad you had a great vacation!!

What a beautiful place to hike! I like the father/son excursions you guys go on.

Hiking seems a bit safer than skiing :)
Hope your knee is improving!

I have a swimming question. I have been working on my freestyle but really have difficulty maintaining a good kick while rolling from side to side. Today for the heck of it I tried a couple lengths back on my stomach - flat and felt much faster and a much stronger kicker. Am I just too impatient and I need to keep working on the rolling stuff or is it not that bad to be flatter. Everything feels better - my face in the water, my kick, my speed....... Just wondering. I hope I explained this well.

I have a feeling when I am actually in the tri I will be doing anything I can just to move forward and be done.

I always appreciate how you answer my questions. I hope you don't mind more.
I am not writing anything off. I think you are right.
Do you swim side to side or more level when you do the free style?
I go through stages of being discouraged and I seem to be in one. My instructor did tell me I am much more down in the water (head) than I was which I know is good. I think I am okay with the whole face in the water thing but there are absolutely times I worry about breathing.

I think I will get what I can from my next 3 lessons and then I am going to just keep practicing what I have learned. At some point in the future I may take lessons again but this will be it for now. I am finding I am not loving swimming like I was and I don't like that.
