2011 Report Card

I had a draft blog post about goals for 2011 and never finished it.  I didn't have many and I didn't review them at all.

Goals:
Swim - be able to swim without too much shoulder pain  ------------> not doing too good or bad here - B
Bike - Average 23 mph for a sprint and 22 mph for an oly bike leg --> D. no sprint, 20.4 mph at an Oly
Run - average 8 minute miles at a sprint, 8:30 at an Oly --------------> C. no sprint, 9:01 at an Oly

NOLA 70.3 Goal
swim - 2:30/100 = 53 minutes  ----> cancelled N/A
bike -16 mph (oly pace - 20%) ---> 19.4 mph  - A++++
run - 2:15 (hm pr + 20%) ---------> 2:15:06 at NOLA - A

NOLA Stretch Goal
swim - 2:20/100 --> cancelled N/A - I did 2:15 for, my private HIM but it was a pool swim
bike - 18 mph ----> 19.4 mph
run 2 hours -------> might have been possible if I biked slower and took in more nutrition

So my A race goals were met, while my general "get faster" goals were not.  This reminds me of the quote "A goal without a plan is just a dream".  I went looking for the author of that quote and didn't find it.  It may be a variation of this quote.

I had a solid plan for NOLA and exceeded my goal despite my nutrition failure.  I'll follow the same plan for my HIM this summer.  I'm thinking about changing from Racine, WI 70.3 to the Door County, WI HIM one week later.  I think the course will be much prettier.

On an unrelated note, we had our first snow today.  Now Spring can arrive :-).

Kind of nice that my goals still mostly revolve around finishing and hopefully not being DFL. While I do want to get faster (and think I'm getting there in general), times are my main goal. Maybe in another year or so.

Looks like you had a pretty good year though. The private HIM is still super cool to me. I might have to try something like that, but with Oly distances. I'm not sure I'll be ready for a HIM in 2012.

I have a good friend who does the Door County HIM every year and thinks it's a great race.

Nice job onyour goals! Mine were pretty much pass/fail, which makes for easier success AND simplifies grading. :)

I like your report card system. Maybe I will do one for next years. Hmm... hey, maybe I could break it up into quarters or semesters.

Very specific goals there! I am too broad, perhaps. Or I just don't list them because I don't want the world to see me fail. I am starting to get braver and have listed time goals for the 10K and such.

Funny about the snow! We probably won't see any until March- then just for two hours.

I like specific goals...I think it holds me accountable more. When I'm too broad, I don't always shoot for the moon. :) Thanks for the comment about my mileage. 85 miles is too much for me right now (IMO) so it scared me a little to count from Wed to today instead of my usual "weekly mileage" days. To answer your question, I don't count calories. I just eat when I'm hungry but I've found that I eat more often than that too because I want to make sure I'm getting enough. Last time around I think I got too skinny and didn't fuel properly. this time, I'm just stuffing my face often! :)

Wow. You are very specific. I must be just a "winger" compared to this!!!
Like your snowfall....very pretty. From our first snowfall we know there is now 6 months of winter to get through;)
Read your last post on decision not to do a full. Good for you for knowing who you are and what you're doing/capable of. Maybe next year we can meet up at one together. And get the tattoos at the same time:D

Ditto what Dawn said. I really admire you're specificity.
I agree Door County is probably much more scenic than Racine. We used to camp there every year.
Love your perspective on snow as well, one and done! : D

Those are some awesome goal successes! Nie thinking about the course scenery, sometimes we forget how important that is. :) Happy New Year!

Some solid successes in 2011 Mike - congrats!

Very solid successes this past year! I should set some more specific goals, something that is measurable, but seem to default to the vague "do better at running".
If you are back from Florida in time, you should try out the Xterra Illinois Wilds in Peoria. I THINK it is August 19th. Same with Kate, if she is reading this...

good stuff Mike. All solid and here we go for another year...

Go scenic.

Love how you lay the goals for the year out. Mine was to just run and not get hurt (too badly). I get more specific on race goals...and give myself an A for effort but something less for performance :P

Here's to hitting all the marks in 2012!

Reindeer Mary came mountain biking with me exactly one time. She had her husband's bike, which was way too big for her. It did not go very well for her that day, so she probably won't bite on the clinic. Hoping that SuperHero Kate might have some room in her schedule!
